GOP: Dems will block Trump from appointing Supreme Court justice
Democrats have vowed to block President Donald Trump from nominating any Supreme Court Justice until he commits to repealing ObamaCare, despite the fact that they control the White House.
The latest sign came Friday from Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), who sent a letter to Sen. Joe Manchin (D) asking the Democratic senator to make clear that he will not support Trump nominating a justice.
“We have a President who has shown utter contempt for our Constitution, our democratic process, and our Constitution itself,” Crowley wrote in a letter dated March 1.
“He has repeatedly refused to honor his solemn obligations to the American people.
He has made clear he will do whatever he can to thwart a full and fair election.”
Democrats are also threatening to block Trump’s nominees if they agree to a “fair and transparent process,” including by requiring them to provide documents and witnesses to explain their positions.
The Hill reports that the Democrats have already blocked Trump’s picks for the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the Supreme Court, and the US Department of Labor.
But, the Democrats want to do more, particularly with nominations for the Supreme and US departments of Labor and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The senators are not the only ones to demand a fair and transparent confirmation process.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D–CA) has demanded that Trump release his tax returns and is calling on Trump to release his transcripts of his appearances on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Democrats are demanding that the president release his own tax returns.
