MLB’s ‘sports fan island’ will be relocated to Arizona in 2018
The MLB’s “sports fan” island will be moved to Arizona next year, according to the MLB.com article.
The move was announced Wednesday by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.
It will take place in 2018, with the move being made in conjunction with the MLB and the MLBPA, which is a non-profit group representing players, fans and players’ unions.
Manfred also announced that the relocation will be accomplished with a $500 million contribution from MLB to the Arizona Sports and Entertainment Commission.
Manfield, who is the commissioner of MLB’s major league clubs, said the new ballpark will be located at Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix, and will open for baseball in 2019.
The new ballpark is being constructed in collaboration with the Arizona Coyotes, Manfred said.
He said the MLB’s participation in the project is in recognition of the baseball fans’ support of the team and its local community.
The project is expected to be completed in 2021, and the relocation is expected in 2024.
